Design and Build Quality

The TCL 55-inch Class S4 4K boasts a sleek and modern design. It features a thin bezel, giving you more screen real estate to enjoy your favorite content. The build quality is solid, and the TV feels sturdy and well-constructed. The TCL 4 Series Roku TV has just okay build quality. It’s built using basic materials and cheap plastic, so even though there are no serious issues with it, it doesn’t feel very solid overall.

The ‘Bright HDR’ Picture Mode is a bit brighter, reaching a peak of 338 cd/m² with a 10% window, but it’s still not bright enough for an impactful HDR experience. These measurements are with the default settings in the ‘Dark HDR’ Picture Mode, with the Color Temperature set to ‘Warm’.

The peak brightness of the TCL S405 is approximately 300 nits, which is insufficient to display HDR content to its fullest extent. HDR content on the TCL S405 might not appear as vivid or bright as it would on a TV with a greater peak brightness as a result.

In our tests, the TCL 4 Series TV registered 97.2% of the Rec. 709 colour gamut, which is better than the Vizio V-Series 50-inch 4K HDR Smart TV’s (96.75%) range but not quite as wide as the Samsung 40-inch NU7100’s range of 98.4%. Although we prefer 4K TVs to measure close to 100%, the TCL is within the range we anticipate for a more affordable model.
