Design
The 14-inch body is thin and it’s light at about 3 pounds (1.4 kg), but if you were hoping for something smaller, HP makes an 11.6-inch Stream for $20 less. it’s an equivalent internal components because the 14, but has one less USB 3.1 port and a microSD card slot rather than the 14’s full-size slot.
The Stream may be a nice-looking laptop, too, assuming you’re cool with the brilliant blue color. It’s all plastic with ridges on the lid that provides it texture and added grip. The blue continues inside apart from the brilliant white keyboard.
Plenty of ports for peripherals.
With its meager 32GB of storage — only about half which is out there to use — it’s nice HP didn’t skimp on expansion options. An SD card fits almost entirely within the slot, too, so you’ll easily leave a card in there for files and applications.
You can, of course, use those ports for a keyboard and mouse to avoid the laptop’s touchpad and keyboard. The latter isn’t altogether unpleasant, but there’s little or no travel and therefore the keys feel thin and flimsy like they could pop off or pack up if you type too hard. The touchpad is usually OK, but i like to recommend shutting off most of the multitouch options like pinch-to-zoom and turning up the palm rejection setting.
If you’re hooking up a keyboard and mouse, though, you would possibly also connect a monitor also . Perfect Light Use Laptop
I’m a technologist and writer and have had many laptops over the years; weight is an important consideration in the items I purchase, I don’t like long OS lags when doing things, and I need a solid keyboard and battery life that is functional. This machine hits on all those points. The keyboard in last year’s model was *slightly* better and the trackpad is serviceable. I generally buy external mice for $15-20 when I buy a laptop and then turn off the trackpad in the OS. The bloatware is minimized and is easy to remove. For general usage and readability the screen is fine, but it is a bit washed out. If you want to do large file manipulation or have lots of media this is not the machine for you; this is for writers or basic consumption through online streaming, writing emails, etc. It’s durable and for the price point I can take it with me to do things without worrying too much about coffee shop spills, or drops, etc. A system that has none of the downsides this has would probably cost $350 or so. Lenovo makes several with 64G SSDs and I had purchased one of those only to have to return it due to the awkward placement of the Shift Key on the right-hand side which made typing impossible for me. In short, I was exceptionally pleased with the first generation HP Stream and while I don’t love this one as much from a keyboard and screen standpoint, the 4G of Ram is essential to make even a light-use laptop functional and I have absolutely no regrets.
